Relational Couples Counseling
I believe couples therapy is a way to create stronger partnerships as well as stronger individuals. Couples therapy can serve as individual therapy with your partner present, where you both are learning ways to walk in the world that promote making connections and building healthy relationships.
I am a certified Realtional Life Therapist. Created by Terry Real, the author of The New Rules For Marriage, RLT therapy cuts to the chase with couples issues, getting to the heart of the problem quickly and effectively.
I became a couples therapist in part because I received wonderful couples counseling that rescued my own marriage. It taught me how to be a more relational person and to see the good and bad ways I interact with everyone in my life.
I would love to help you to turn your relationship around, with yourself and with your partner! Please note that I am a "hands-on" therapist. This means I will be direct with you if I see ways you might be harming to your relationship or diminishing of your partner...but I promise I will do it respectfully and I'll admit to my own failings as well! Respectful living can be challenging at times, but it is so rewarding if you're willing to let go of blame and resentment.
Personal Growth and Healing
I believe that every person is smart, insightful, and deserving of respect. I bring curiosity, interest, and appreciation of your knowledge and experiences to our sessions. I'm not a sit-back-and-just-nod kind of therapist. I'll jump right in with enthusiasm, knowing that we are going to uncover solutions together if I ask good questions and provide a new perspective.
I will help you to identify areas for growth and healing. My training in family-of-origin trauma as well as other kinds of relational trauma works well with my knowledge about the human nervous system. Using a combination of education, experiential work, and body-based therapy, I help individuals to re-claim their personal power and authenticity. Many of us have templates from our past that we keep re-creating over and over; and research has show that with guidance and support we can re-wire our brains.
Parenting with Love and Respect
I help modern-day families to address 21st century issues. I work in a variety of formats including seeing the whole family together as well as working with parents separately.
I also offer the option of one-time parent consultations for common parenting dilemmas. Typical topics include drug & alcohol use, academic issues, divorce, re-marriage, blended family issues, gifted and talented child issues, and helping young adults move from financial dependence to independence.
I am supportive of any parenting approach that supports healthy kids and healthy parents. I am also affirming of attachment parenting practices and have helped couples to resolve differences of opinion in this area.
