This beginning "Growing Your Functional Adult Skills" class covers Pia Mellody's Five Core issues of Self-Worth, Boundaries, Self-Awareness, Self-Care and Moderation.
This class is for anyone who has times where you feel like you're not quite a full grown up: times when you struggle with your sense of self-worth, or it seems like your self worth is based on whether other people are happy with you or not; if you have issues with keeping personal boundaries and you either take things too personally or you aren't using a filter when you speak; if you struggle with feeling you need to be good/perfect or that you aren't good enough; if you have trouble doing good self-care or asking for help when you need it; if you have trouble saying no; and/or you have issues with self-control or controlling others. All of these are emotional maturity issues.
And all of these can be developing by building your Functional Adult skills!
Pia coined the term Functional Adult to refer to being in a place of emotional maturity. We are being our functional adult self when we know we have inherent worth, we are using good boundaries, we are self-aware, we are doing good self care and utilizing moderation.
Each class has 60-75 minutes of formal lecture and handouts, then 15-30 min for participant questions. Participants are invited to send questions in between classes and will be given a recorded mp3 of the lectures each week, for future personal review.
This class is open to people who are new to this functional adult model as well as for people who want to deepen their understanding.

In this four hour class, we will look at how to begin working with the pink elephant in the room – our bodies! (more specifically our Autonomic Nervous System). It turns out that if our body is in a threat response, many of our body’s responses are beyond our conscious control. There is often a conflict between what the personality/ego is wanting and how the organism/body is responding. Working with the nervous system can help bring them back into harmony. I wish I had learned this in my Master’s program! Please send your questions in advance and I will incorporate them into our time together. I look forward to sharing this information with you! Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to hold a spot!
NEXT CLASS DATE TO BE SCHEDULED FOR SUMMER 2020
Sat, Oct 12th
Traditional therapy has focused on thoughts and emotions, while the current studies suggest that a key to healing trauma lies in our bodies and specifically in the nervous system! In this morning workshop you will learn the basics of how to better tune into your body and your internal threat response system. Practicing tuning into your inner signals will help you to quickly recognize your earliest signs of activation, and ultimately grow your capacity to respond and recover effectively.
During the three hours, you will learn more about how your nervous system works to keep us safe, how to communicate with it, and ways to befriend your own system. You will learn some self-regulating tools as well as some co-regulation exercises you may choose to try with a trusted friend after the workshop. All of the in-workshop exercises are optional; each person will be encouraged to do self-care and opt-out of any guided experiences.
**Please note this workshop is open to both regular folks and therapists, but the focus is not on doing Somatic therapy on clients; it's about working with your own nervous system. Terri Delaney, LICSW is an Advanced Level Somatic Experiencing student and she is excited to share these simple and effective tools with you!
